Motorcycle Jacket Engineering & Material Science
Selecting a motorcycle jacket is an exercise in managing the physics of a slide and the thermodynamics of the body. Whether navigating Auckland’s humidity or the bracing winds of Wellington, understanding the technical construction of your gear is essential for safety and longevity.
The Physics of Protection: Leather vs. Textile
The choice between leather and textile dictates how material handles kinetic energy and frictional heat during a slide.
• Leather: Bovine hide remains the gold standard for abrasion resistance. Its natural, dense fibrous structure allows it to "shred" slowly during high-speed slides. Our REV'IT! and Alpinstars race gear is engineered to withstand seconds of friction against tarmac without structural failure.
• Synthetic Polymers: Technical textiles, like the Cordura used in our Richa range, offer superior versatility. They are lighter and more flexible than leather, though they are often one-hit garments where frictional heat may eventually fuse the fibres.
The Premium Choice: Laminated Construction
Laminated jackets carry a higher price point because the waterproof membrane is thermally bonded directly to the outer shell. In contrast, standard drop-liner jackets have a loose internal layer. This lamination prevents the jacket from "wetting out" and becoming heavy; instead, rain beads straight off. This keeps you warmer and allows the gear to dry almost instantly, making it the premier choice for long-distance touring in unpredictable NZ conditions.
Membrane Science & Maintenance
Waterproof jackets use microporous membranes with pores 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet, but 700 times larger than water vapour. This allows sweat to escape as a gas while blocking rain.
• Care: Avoid standard detergents; they strip the water-repellent coating, causing the fabric to soak up rain and feel heavy. This wetting out stops sweat from escaping, leaving you cold. Use dedicated cleaners to keep the pores breathable.
• Leather: Without natural oils, leather becomes brittle. Regular conditioning ensures fibres remain supple so the jacket "slides" rather than "tears" upon impact.
Professional Fitment at Cyclespot
A jacket only works if the CE-rated armour stays in place. If the fit is too loose, protectors can rotate away from the joint during a fall. Visit our Auckland, Taranaki, or Wellington stores to test the fit in a seated riding position, ensuring the chassis remains secure under tension.
