Alpinestars: Technical Innovation and the Science of Protection

Since its inception in 1963, Alpinestars has transitioned from a small Italian bootmaker to the global authority in motorcycle safety and performance. Tech-Air®: Autonomous Airbag Technology

The most significant advancement in modern protective gear is the Tech-Air® system. This isn’t just a garment; it is an active safety device. Utilising high-speed sensors and sophisticated algorithms, the system monitors the rider's movements over 1,000 times per second. In the event of an unavoidable impact or loss of control, the airbag deploys in milliseconds, providing comprehensive protection to the torso, shoulders, and collarbones. This technology represents the absolute pinnacle of current safety standards, offering impact attenuation far superior to traditional passive protectors.

Material Science and Ergonomic Chassis Design

Alpinestars gear is constructed using a proprietary blend of materials designed for high-tensile strength and thermal stability.

  • Race-Grade Leather: Utilising premium bovine and kangaroo hides, Alpinestars leather suits and jackets offer world-class abrasion resistance. These hides are treated to maintain flexibility while resisting the intense heat generated during a high-speed slide.
  • Advanced Textiles: For adventure and touring, high-denier polyamide fabrics are strategically combined with stretch panels. This ensures the jacket remains robust in impact zones while allowing the full range of motion required for technical riding.
  • DFS (Dynamic Friction Shield): You will notice external sliders on shoulders and elbows. These are engineered to decrease friction against the tarmac, encouraging a slide rather than a tumble, which significantly reduces the risk of rotational injuries.

Ventilation and Climate Management

Understanding the NZ climate is vital. Alpinestars utilises laser-cut perforations and high-flow mesh inserts to manage thermal regulation. By creating internal air channels, these garments promote evaporative cooling, preventing rider fatigue during hot Auckland summers without compromising the structural integrity of the gear.
